Call for applications for 6 postdoctoral positions – EUR ArChal
The Archaeological Challenges Graduate Research School (EUR ArChal) is launching a call for applications for 6 postdoctoral positions, with a length of 21 months (01 December 2026–31 August 2028).
The successful candidates will be based at one of the CNRS Research Units (UMR) that are partners of EUR ArChal (UMR 8096 ArchAm, UMR 7041 ArScAn, UMR 8215 Trajectoires, UMR 8167 Orient et Méditerranée, UMR 8068 TEMPS). EUR ArChal in a few words
EUR ArChal is led by the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and supported by seven partner institutions (https://eur-archal.pantheonsorbonne.fr/en/partners).
It develops original teaching and research projects based on cutting-edge methods in archaeology and on issues related to current global challenges. Through a diachronic analysis of the strategies adopted in the past to address these challenges, the EUR ArChal offers a unique knowledge base on the subject and aims to contribute, in the light of the past, to the implementation of sustainable strategies to meet the challenges of the future.
The training and research project is structured around four major challenges:
- Environment and climate change
- Power and inequalities
- Conflicts, mobilities and migrations
- Technology and innovation

Who can apply?
• Holders of a PhD in archaeology from the University of Paris 1 or one of its partner universities: Freie Universität Berlin (Germany), Universidad Complutense Madrid (Spain), Alma Mater Studiorum Università di Bologna (Italy), and the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales – INALCO (France). Holders of a PhD in the fields of cultural heritage, conservation-restoration, or art history awarded by one of these same institutions may also apply.
• The PhD must have been awarded less than three years prior to 1 October 2026.
• There are no age or nationality requirements.
Remuneration
The monthly gross salary is 2,858 euros.
How to apply
Your application should include:
A curriculum vitae.
A 150-word summary of the project, in French and English.
A list of six keywords, in French and English.
A copy of the doctoral degree certificate and, for degrees obtained in France, the thesis defence report.
A project proposal of no more than 8 pages, in French or English (font size 12, single-spaced). The objectives, the methodology developed, the expected results and the scientific scope of the project must be set out. A concise explanation of how the project relates to the scientific objectives and to one or more of the EUR ArChal’s research themes (challenges) is required. Their integration within the host laboratory (UMR) must also be clearly explained.
Two letters of recommendation, written by academic personalities capable of assessing the candidate’s academic background and work. These letters may be written, for example, by the PhD supervisor or a member of the thesis examination jury.

Submission and assessment of application
All documents required for the application must be compiled into a single PDF file and sent, via a file transfer service, to elise.morero@univ-paris1.fr, by 23:59 on September 20, 2026.
Applications will be assessed on the basis of the application submitted by an evaluation committee. This committee is made up of academics and researchers from the various partner institutions. The composition of the committee will be published on the EUR website.
The results will be published during the second half of October 2026.
